10 free ways to promote your business online

When you run a business, particularly one that is brand new, it can be hard to get enough momentum to get it started. Below is a list of 10 free ways to get some traffic and with it hopefully new customers. (In no particular order)

1) Comment on popular blogs Find popular blogs that relate to your line of business and make helpful comments in their comments section. One way to find popular blogs is by browsing technorati’s top 100 blogs

2) Write free to publish articles Write articles related to your service or products. Include a signature line at the end of the article pointing to your web site. Submit the article to good article directories. When others republish your article you gain free exposure.

3) Guest blog on popular blogs This is slightly different to article writing in that your article will only be published the one time. The idea is to guest blog for a popular blog which can not only send lots of traffic your way but also help you make a name for yourself (and your business).

4) Squidoo Create a squidoo lens on a topic related to your business. This helps raise awareness, help with search engines and can send traffic to your site too.

5) Social Networking Become active at one (or more) of the many social networking sites out there. Create groups, hold online events, there are many options in the world of social networks (this includes forums too).

6) Donate prizes to competitions Keep your eyes open for people holding competitions. By donating prizes you are getting your name out there.

7) Start your own blog Relate it your business but write in a more personal voice. This can really build trust and relationships and can help the business get off the ground.

8) Optimize for search engines It pays to learn the basics of search engine optimization. You only have to do this once and you will be getting free traffic from search engines for a long time to come.

9) Craig’sList Personally I have not tried this but I hear others have had success posting a free ad on CraigsList

10) Free link exchanges Asking for link exchanges with sites who have a similar audience to yours can work. Be prepared for a lot of people to ignore your request however if you email them out of the blue. This works better by building up a bit of a network first and exchanging links with people in your network.

  1. Excellent article. I agree with all of it except for free link exchanges. It is much better for SEO purposes to get incoming links from related websites without a reciprocal link. You can do that through the other nine options. This is a well-thought out article. Thanks for sharing it!
